Apple HomeKit Doorlock - (Schlage)

Home automation is a term that is used a lot in the last couple of years.  What is home automation exactly and why would it even matter to me.  The term home automation conjures up visions of multi-million dollar homes that do all sorts of wild things like automatically turning on music as you walk into a room.  But the truth is there are home automation products that everyday people can use and implement to make our everyday lives easier and more convenient.

One of the best and most convenient home automation products that I have ever used is Apple’s HomeKit door locks. There are a variety of manufacturers that make door locks, but the one that I chose for my home was made by Schlage.  I will get into the details of why I chose this type of lock later in the article.  There are a number of reasons that I chose the Schlage Sense Smart Deadbolt.  The link to the Schlage front door deadbolt I opted for is in the link below this paragraph.  The link to the Schlage deadbolts I used on my Patio Door and my Garage Door can be found here.  A photo link is also located further down in the article.

Schlage Brand

The Schlage brand of deadbolt has been a trusted name in the deadbolt industry since 1920.  They produce great products that are also stylish.  I chose Schlage because of their reputation and the fact that they offered an Apple HomeKit product that looked very nice on my home.

Apple Ecosystem

The Apple ecosystem has a vast array of product that more people are very familiar with.  This was one of my determining factors in selecting a smart deadbolt for my home.  Every member of my family has multiple Apple devices, so the decision to go with a HomeKit device was an easy one for me.  You will want to make sure that you have an Apple TV to use as the HomeKit hub, otherwise you will need to use one of you existing Apple devices as the hub, which may not be convenient.

Apple HomeKit Security

HomeKit security is better than most of the other smart devices that are available becuase the secutiy of HomeKit devices existst within the Apple device ecosystem.  HomeKit provices a home automation infrastructure that uses iCloud, iOS, iPadOS, and macOS security to protect and sync private data wiothout exposing it to Apple.

HomeKit is based on public-parivate key pairs that are generated on each Apple device for each user of HomeKit, which becomes their identity on the HomeKit network.
